A Category D1 entitlement on your UK driving licence permits you to drive passenger vehicles with between 9 and 16 passenger seats (in addition to the driver) and up to 8 metres in length, with a trailer up to 750kg MAM.

If you passed your standard car (Category B) driving test before 1st January 1997, you usually hold grandfather rights (Category D1 with code 101 restriction: 'not for hire or reward').

If you passed your car test on or after 1st January 1997, you hold a standard Category B licence only and must take the DVSA D1 theory and practical tests to drive a 9–16 passenger seat vehicle.

Before commencing practical in-vehicle training, you need:

1. A full, valid UK Category B (car) driving licence.
2. A completed D4 medical examination passed with a registered doctor.
3. Provisional D1 entitlement added to your driving licence by the DVLA.
4. Passed DVSA D1 theory test (multiple-choice) and hazard perception test.

Course hours are tailored to your prior driving history, manual transmission confidence, and familiarity with larger vehicles:

• Gold Course (16 Hours — 2 to 3 days): Designed for novice drivers who have only driven standard passenger cars and have little or no experience behind the wheel of larger vans or commercial vehicles.
• Silver Course (12 Hours — 2 to 3 days): Recommended for intermediate drivers who regularly drive 3.5t long-wheelbase vans (e.g., Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit) or motorhomes and require targeted reverse manoeuvring and DVSA test coaching.
• Bronze Course (8 Hours — 1 to 2 days): Suitable for experienced commercial drivers, delivery drivers, or those who previously held D1 and require a targeted refresher on test criteria and vehicle control.

Yes. All our structured Category D1 practical course packages (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) include 1-to-1 instruction, fuel, dual-control training vehicle use, vehicle provision for the test itself, and the official DVSA practical test booking fee.

While our first-time pass rates are exceptionally high, test nerves can occasionally happen. If a re-test is required:

Under our Practical Re-Test Policy, a re-test requires a minimum of 3 hours vehicle & instructor time plus the DVSA practical test booking fee. This ensures you maintain vehicle familiarity and address any specific minor faults prior to re-examination.

We also offer an optional Pass Protection Package (£399.00) at the time of initial booking, which covers up to 2 free test retakes including training vehicle provision.

If you intend to drive a minibus for hire or reward (commercially, as a paid professional driver, or for commercial transport operators), you must hold a full Driver CPC card by completing Driver CPC Module 2 (Case Studies) and Module 4 (Practical Demonstration Test). Drivers operating on a purely voluntary basis or under certain Section 19/22 community permits may be exempt. We provide complete CPC Module 4 vehicle and training support.

Yes. Our training minibus is fully dual-control equipped, commercially insured, and meets all DVSA test vehicle requirements (minimum length, weight, seat specifications, and visibility standards).

We recommend booking as early as possible so we can align your in-vehicle training schedule directly with available DVSA practical driving test slots. However, we will always accommodate short-notice enquiries where instructor and test slot availability permits.

Course cancellations made more than 14 days prior to course start receive a full deposit refund minus any pre-booked DVSA test fees. Cancellations between 7 and 14 days may incur a 50% fee. Yes. We regularly deliver D1 minibus training programmes for schools, colleges, scout groups, sports clubs, care homes, and community organizations. We can arrange flexible multi-driver schedules and corporate invoicing.
